Top 10 Tips
- Keep your thermostat setting at 68° F degrees in the winter and 78° F degrees in the summer. Set the thermostat 5 to 10 degrees lower when sleeping or away.
- Clean or replace heating and cooling system filters as needed and close vents in unused rooms (unless you have a heat pump). Check and maintain your heating and cooling system annually.
- Consider storm doors and windows or double-paned glass to help keep indoor air inside and outdoor air outside.
- Use caulking and weather-stripping to plug up cracks and air leaks around windows and doors.
- Make sure you have adequate insulation in your attic, under floors, around basements, in crawl spaces, and around foundation walls.
- Try a lower water heater thermostat setting such as 120° F and install a water heater jacket.
- Install water-flow restrictors in showers and faucets.
- Don't let hot water run while washing, shaving, or doing dishes
- Don't use the dishwasher or sink for less than a full load. Use cold water instead of hot for washing clothes.
- Don't block heating or cooling outlets, such as radiators or registers, with furniture, carpets, or draperies.
- Use low-power light bulbs and lower wattages where possible. Turn off unneeded lights.
